itSMFnz update - 2019

Kia ora!

itSMF New Zealand has had a pretty full on year, with more to come. Like many other chapters around the globe, we are fully supported by volunteers, which makes it challenging when trying to deliver value to our members, and we don’t always manage to get it right.

In 2018, we continued to provide branch events around the country, to varying levels of success, and this is being continued in 2019 with the establishment of a new branch in the fastest growing NZ city of Hamilton. However, we are finding that member attendance at branch meetings is dropping and this is our focus for 2019.  Under consideration are holding “virtual” branch meetings using technology like Google Hangouts, and the establishment of collaborative tools such as Slack, to encourage discussion among members.

As always, our chapter calendar revolves around the annual conference. 2018 saw us take part in the bi-annual “ITx” conference with 12 other tech organisations. We took away lessons learnt from attendees and itSMFnz committee members, which we hope to be able to put into practice at the next conference.

The call for speakers is open for the 2019 conference until the end of February, so, no matter where in the world you are, if you would like to speak (or sponsor), please let us know via www.itsmf.org.nz/conference.  We do like to offer our attendees something more than just presentations on ITIL, so there is normally a good mix of presentations and discussions (lean coffee & panels) around DevOps, Lean, KCS, leadership, COBIT and of course ITIL, along with anything else that we think will be of interest.  The theme this year is "Working smarter; Being better" where we want the conversation to continue on better/new/improved ways of working but also to continue on the theme of mental health awareness and improvement as this is a big topic affecting everyone, including our members.

Of course, we can’t only plan ahead to this conference, we also have to think beyond, and if all goes according to plan, we will be able to announce a couple of VERY exciting speakers to our 2020 conference.

So, 2019 is looking to be an exciting year for itSMFnz as we try and make some significant, yet subtle, changes to our chapter, to encourage member participation and learning, which in turn will deliver greater value to all NZ businesses.
